WHO IS A GRAPHIC DESIGNER?

A graphic designer is a professional within the graphic design and graphic arts industry who assembles together images, typography, or motion graphics to create a piece of design. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphic_designer 

Dr. Tan taught us about being a designer. To be a good designer, we must know how to change consumers behavior. For example, as designer, we can promote people not to use fur in making cloth. This is the way to save animal.




Being a designer is the responsibilities to
design as an creative expression toward social issues

The language of design could be more lively than literary words, more direct than fine artworks, louder than shouts of saying. There are several role of designer that can practice:

Designer Role


Social worker | a designer can design a product that can solve problem of people or situation

Critic | a designer can voice out and express to the work that can tackle social problem.

Artist | a designer can create and design an art through the design.

Dr. Tan had mention some name of person that invent a good and useful design. For example:

The example of invention and design that can overcome the problem is facekini at China. The facekini is a mask designed for swimmers which covers the head and reveals only the eyes, nose, and mouth.This mask is popular in the beach side town of Qingdao, where it is used by people for protecting themselves from tan inducing UV rays while in direct sunlight and from jellyfish, insects and other irritants while at the beach. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facekini






WHAT IS CRITERIA & QUALITY OF DESIGNERS?

  • Have comprehensive knowledge of design fundamentals and theories
  • Have professional skills in basic technologies - a designer should have mastery software usage of skill.
  • Have sensitive observation and mastery of details - be serious when intend to observe.
  • Have good collaborative and communication skills - the more language that know, the better.
  • Have strong sense of responsibility and team work - deadline is deadline. Should have Belbin's team work.
  • Accumulate social experience while keeping abreast of trends - everybody starts from beginner. This explained snowball effect.
  • Concern about individual virtue development - reflect positive character in design by reading book and watching movie.
  • Enhance creative and ideation abilities continuously
  • Present personality in value creation

A designer should know their role and have criteria & quality to invent a product that can contribute to the nation.

ASSESSMENT METHODS IN DESIGN AESTHETICS During Design Aesthetic class that lectured by Dr Tan, he taught about Assessment Method in Design Aesthetic.
