Are you Beautiful?

AESTHETICS EVALUATION

Before start Design Aesthetics class, Dr Tan played a game call tongue twister. Its quite difficult because its make my tongue twisted. :) *joke. We are laughing when saw Dr. Tan try to make tongue twister. This things make me remember about a game show that I always saw when I was a kid. The show called "Roda Impian" and its have a category call 'lembut lidah'. This kind of categories resemblance tongue twister.

* Tongue twisters is a great way to practice and improve pronunciation and fluency. It can help to improve accents by using alliteration, which is the repetition of one sound.

Lets have a look to some example of tongue twister (lembut lidah)

Dr. Tan recall about Aesthetics Assessment. There are 3 criterion of aesthetics assessment:

1. Criterion-referenced assessment - based on the characteristic (rubric)
2. Norm-referenced assessment - compare result with other peer
3. Ipsative asessment - compare with past self achievement

Dr. Tan asked several boy students about characteristics of their girlfriend. They listed some characteristics of beauty/ what make they attracted to their girlfriend. Some said:

Kind-hearted
- Gentle
- Beautiful
- Rich
- Handsome etc

So, Dr. Tan said that people naturally know how to define beauty themselves. No matter what characteristics, as long as people like and attracted to the person/ things, so it can define as beautiful.

What is beauty?

*Etymology: Middle English: from Old French beaute, based on Latin bellus 'beautiful, fine'

A combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form , that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight.

  • A combination of qualities that pleases the intellect.
  • Denoting something intended to make someone more attractive.

A beautiful or pleasing thing or person, in particular:

  • A beautiful woman
  • An excellent example of something
  • The pleasing or attractive features of (something)
  • The best aspect or advantage of something

There are 3 way of aesthetics evaluation:

- Subjectivism
- Objectivism
- Relativism
- Emotivism

SUBJECTIVISM

  • Subjectivism is the doctrine that knowledge pertains to persons individually, as opposed to everyone as a whole, and that there is no external or objective truth.
  • Its subjective and there is no external or objective truth
  • No need any guideline or doctrine to make a decision
  • Usually person with subjectivism is fine art artist.

OBJECTIVISM

  • Objectivism advocates the virtues of rational self-interest—virtues such as independent thinking, productiveness, justice, honesty, and self-responsibility. https://www.theobjectivestandard.com/what-is-objectivism/
  • The believe that certain thins, especially moral truth, exist independently of human knowledge or perception of them.
  • The tendency to emphasized what external to or independent of the mind
  • *everything in this world have standard either we agree or not.

RELATIVISM

  • Relativism is the concept that points of view have no absolute truth or validity within themselves, but rather only relative, subjective value according to differences in perception and consideration. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relativism
  • Decision make based on comparison. Eg: beautiful in Malaysia may not be beautiful in other country.
  • The judgment of beauty is relative to individuals, culture, time period and context.

There are some example of different opinion and perception of beautiful from certain country, culture and society.

Three Inches Lotus Feet
Chinese women's feet were bound in feudal China. This corrupt custom originated from as early as the Sui Dynasty (581–618), and became popular among people in the Song Dynasty (960–1279). At that time a woman with a pair of small feet was regarded as a beauty. Though it caused severe pain, many women bound their feet to follow the custom. http://www.chinahighlights.com/shanghai/article-discover-foot-binding.htm

A Lady in Ethiopia
The lip plate, also known as a lip plug or lip disc, is a form of body modification. Increasingly large discs (usually circular, and made from clay or wood) are inserted into a pierced hole in either the upper or lower lip, or both, thereby stretching it. The term labret denotes all kinds of pierced-lip ornaments, including plates and plugs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lip_plate

Brass coils Kayan People in Myanmar
Padaung (Yan Pa Doung) is a Shan term for the Kayan Lahwi (the group in which women wear the brass neck coils). Women of the Kayan tribes identify themselves by their forms of dress. Women of the Kayan Lahwi tribe are well known for wearing neck rings, brass coils that are placed around the neck, appearing to lengthen it. The women wearing these coils are known as "giraffe women" to tourists. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kayan_people_(Myanmar)

In conclusion, maybe you feel you are the prettiest person, but then, when you travel to other place, you will realized that pretty/ beautiful is relative and be affected by surrounding culture, society and fashion.
